The term “binocular vision” is used to describe how effectively (or ineffectively) the eyes team together when tracking, converging or moving from one distance to another. This App is of interest to optometrists, ophthalmologists and other eye related allied health professionals (such as Opticians or Orthoptists). Other professions dealing with hand-eye integration therapy (i.e. occupational therapists) may be interested in this App.

The NuBV App (free version) allows the user to do two main things:

1.Perform the Quaid 3-step test (to determine which extraocular muscle(s) is / are dysfunctional)

2.Have patients answer a standardized binocular vision dysfunction questionnaire to gauge symptoms.

The Quaid 3-step test is a diagnostic test for use by optometrists, ophthalmologists or orthoptists and requires three tests to be administered from an eye motility standpoint. The answers are entered into a template and the abnormal extraocular muscle pair(s) is given. This test is based on a peer reviewed publication by Dr. Quaid (see References section in App for actual paper by Dr. Quaid, Optometrist, F.C.O.V.D., Ph.D). Unlike Park’s 3-step test, the Quaid 3-step test can be used in extraocular muscle issues with no vertical component and that are bilateral.

The symptom scoring tool is a useful to administer both prior to and after vision therapy. This questionnaire is a standardized questionnaire based on the CITT Study (Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial, a Level I evidence paper, i.e. double blind, placebo controlled, randomized study co-authored by both optometry and ophthalmology). The tool automatically scores the result from the questionnaire and gives a risk level associated with the score (0-60 scale, with >15 being a “fail”).
